11 Hidden Gems in Santorini Only Locals Know About

10 February 20256 min read

Beyond the caldera views and blue domes, Santorini has a quieter, more authentic side — ancient ruins, wine caves, volcanic hot springs, and wild beaches that only locals visit. Most can only be reached by car.

11 Hidden Gems in Santorini (That Most Tourists Miss)

Santorini is famous for Oia sunsets, blue-domed churches, and caldera views. But the island holds dozens of quieter treasures that most tourists never find — because they never rent a car.

1. Vlychada Beach

A surreal, lunar landscape of wind-sculpted white cliffs behind dark volcanic sand. No crowds, no noise — just pure, otherworldly beauty. Best reached by car; no bus service.

2. Akrotiri Lighthouse

On the southernmost tip of the island, this 19th-century lighthouse offers the most dramatic sunset view on Santorini — rivalling Oia but without the crowds. The drive from Fira takes only 20 minutes.

3. Profitis Ilias Monastery

At the highest point of Santorini (567m), this monastery offers 360-degree panoramic views of the entire island, the caldera, and the sea. A short, winding drive from Pyrgos village.

4. Amoudi Bay (Below Oia)

A tiny fishing harbour at the foot of Oia's cliffs, reached by 300 steps (or by car via a winding road). Famous for its fresh fish tavernas and cliff-jumping into deep blue water.

5. Emporio — The Fortified Village

A medieval Venetian-era village with a kasteli (fortress), narrow covered passages, and authentic Santorinian architecture. Almost no tourists, even in peak season.

6. Pyrgos Village

A hillside gem with the ruins of a Venetian castle at its summit. Climb to the top for one of the best 360-degree views on the island. Excellent small tavernas and art galleries.

7. Wine Tours by Car

Santorini produces some of Greece's finest wines — Assyrtiko, Vinsanto, Nykteri. Visit Santo Wines, Venetsanos, Boutari, or the tiny Estate Argyros. A rental car makes a self-guided wine tour effortless.

8. Colombo Beach (North Coast)

A quiet, natural beach on the wind-swept north coast, near the Colombo crater. Black sand, no facilities, and usually deserted. Only accessible by car via a dirt track.

9. Ancient Thera (Mesa Vouno)

A mountaintop archaeological site above Kamari with ruins from Dorian, Roman, and Byzantine eras. Drive up the steep switchback road for stunning views over both coasts simultaneously.

10. Thirassia Island Day Trip

Santorini's quiet neighbour, visible from Oia. Take the small ferry from Ammoudi Bay and spend a day exploring a car-free island with traditional tavernas and zero crowds. Drive your rental to Ammoudi and take the boat.

11. Caldera Drive at Sunset

Drive the full caldera road from Fira to Oia at golden hour and pull over at the marked viewpoints. The light on the cliffs, the volcano in the distance, and the complete absence of bus-tour crowds make this Santorini's most beautiful — and most ignored — experience.
