Complete Guide to Driving in Santorini (2025)

22 March 20258 min read

Caldera switchbacks, narrow village lanes, and the unique challenges of volcanic terrain — everything you need to know before driving in Santorini.

Driving in Santorini: Everything You Need to Know

Renting a car in Santorini is one of the best decisions you can make for your holiday — but driving here is different from anywhere else. The caldera roads are steep and winding, villages have narrow one-way lanes, and the volcanic terrain creates unique driving conditions. This guide prepares you for everything.

The Road Network

Santorini's main road runs along the caldera rim from Fira to Oia, with branches heading east to Kamari, south-east to Perissa, and south-west to Akrotiri. The key routes are:

  • Fira → Oia: 11 km, ~20 minutes, fully paved but winding
  • Fira → Kamari Beach: 8 km, ~10 minutes, fully paved
  • Fira → Perissa Beach: 12 km, ~15 minutes, fully paved
  • Fira → Akrotiri / Red Beach: 12 km, ~20 minutes, fully paved
  • Fira → Athinios Port: 10 km, ~20 minutes, steep switchbacks
  • Fira → Airport (JTR): 6 km, ~10 minutes, fully paved
  • Speed Limits and Rules

    Greece follows standard EU rules:

  • Built-up areas: 50 km/h
  • Open roads: 90 km/h (most roads on Santorini are much slower — treat 50 km/h as the practical maximum)
  • Seatbelts are mandatory for all seats
  • Phones must be hands-free
  • No drinking and driving (limit: 0.5g/L blood alcohol)
  • Parking on Santorini

Parking is scarce in the caldera villages during high season. Key things to know:

  • Fira: The main public car park is at the north end of town. It fills by 10am in summer. Alternative parking near the bus station.
  • Oia: Very limited parking on the outskirts. Arrive before 10am or plan for a 15-minute walk from the overflow lots.
  • Beach car parks: Free but can be small. Arrive before 10am in July and August.
  • Hotels: Most hotels outside Fira centre have parking. Ask at check-in.
  • What Vehicle to Rent

    Vehicle TypeBest For
Economy car (e.g., Fiat Panda)Couples, solo travellers, paved roads only
Standard (e.g., Hyundai i20)Couples with luggage, small families
SUV / Jeep (e.g., Nissan Qashqai)Families, steep roads, cliff access
Jeep WranglerAdventure seekers, open-top caldera driving
ATV / QuadShort trips, scenic caldera roads, couples
    BuggyFun exploration rides, 2-person adventures
Mini Van (e.g., Citroen Berlingo)Groups of 6-7, families, villa transfers

    Tips from the Road

    1. Go slow on caldera roads. The road from Fira to Oia has sharp bends with sheer drops. No guardrails in many places.

    2. Watch for scooters and ATVs. They appear from everywhere, especially around Fira and on the beach roads.

    3. Download Google Maps offline. Signal can be patchy in parts of the island, especially near Akrotiri.

    4. Don't drive the port road at night on your first visit. The Athinios switchbacks are steep and poorly lit.

    5. Fuel up in Fira. There are limited petrol stations — the main ones are on the Fira–Kamari road and near the airport.
