Parking in Santorini

10 March 20265 min read

Find out where to park in Fira, Oia, and popular beaches without the stress — including free parking spots most tourists don't know about.

Parking in Santorini — A Complete Guide

Parking is probably the biggest day-to-day challenge for drivers in Santorini — especially in Fira and Oia during July and August. But with a bit of local knowledge, it's entirely manageable. Here's where to park, what to avoid, and the spots most tourists don't know about.

Parking in Fira

The old town centre is mostly pedestrian. Park on the outskirts and walk in.

Best parking options:

1. North Fira Car Park — the largest free lot, located on the northern edge near the road to Imerovigli. 5-minute walk to the centre. Fills up by 10am in peak season.

2. Bus Station Lot — smaller lot near the central bus station. Convenient for quick stops but limited spaces.

3. Cable Car Area — some spots available near the cable car station. Useful for quick caldera views.

Pro tip: If you're visiting Fira for dinner, arrive after 7pm when day-trippers leave. The north lot empties significantly after sunset.

Parking in Oia

Oia has the most limited parking on the island. The village sits at the tip of the caldera with very narrow approach roads.

Best options:

1. Oia Main Lot — small lot on the western approach. Fills by 9am in summer.

2. Overflow Lot — 500m further along the road. 10-minute walk to the village centre.

3. Restaurant parking — some Oia restaurants have a small private lot. Book dinner and ask about parking.

Key tip: For sunset, arrive by 5pm to secure parking and a viewing spot. Or visit for an early lunch instead — Oia before noon is a different, emptier world.

Parking at Popular Beaches

Most beaches have free, unpaved parking areas — but they fill up fast in high summer.

Parking in Villages

The interior villages of Megalochori, Pyrgos, and Emporio all have small free lots near their main squares. These rarely fill up — even in peak season.

Parking Fines and Towing

  • Yellow lines = tow zone. Towing costs €150+ and a trip to the police station.
  • Blue lines = metered or time-limited. Pay at the meter if required.
  • No lines = generally OK to park, but use common sense.
  • Tips to Avoid Parking Stress

    1. Arrive early. Before 10am in summer is the golden rule.

    2. Use the bus for Fira and Oia. Park at your hotel and bus into the caldera villages — less stressful than circling for parking.

    3. Rent a scooter for village days. A scooter is easier to park than a car in Fira and Oia.

    4. Download offline maps. Google Maps works for navigation, but offline maps help you find alternative lots.

    5. Ask your hotel. Many hotels outside the caldera villages have private parking.
