From the caldera rim road to wine country loops — discover the most breathtaking driving routes on Santorini that you can only experience with your own rental car.
Best Scenic Drives in Santorini
Santorini's dramatic volcanic landscape makes every drive an experience — but some routes are truly spectacular. Here are the drives you shouldn't miss, all best enjoyed with your own rental car at your own pace.
1. The Caldera Road: Fira → Oia
Distance: 11 km | Drive: 20–25 min | Best time: Late afternoon for golden light
The crown jewel of Santorini driving. This road follows the caldera rim from Fira through Firostefani and Imerovigli to Oia, with the volcanic islands and the deep blue caldera visible the entire way. Pull over at the marked viewpoints — especially the one just after Imerovigli with views of Skaros Rock.
Tip: Return via the inland road through Baxedes for a completely different perspective.
2. Fira → Akrotiri Lighthouse
Distance: 15 km | Drive: 20 min | Best time: Sunset
Drive south-west through Megalochori wine country, past vineyards growing the famous Assyrtiko grape, to the lighthouse at Santorini's southern tip. The sunset here is as spectacular as Oia — but you might be one of only a dozen people watching.
Tip: Stop at a winery on the way — Santo Wines or Venetsanos both have caldera-view terraces.
3. Kamari → Ancient Thera Switchbacks
Distance: 4 km | Drive: 10 min (steep!) | Best time: Morning
A breathtaking switchback road climbs from sea level at Kamari to the summit of Mesa Vouno, where the ruins of Ancient Thera sit at 360m. At the top, you can see both coasts simultaneously — Kamari's black sand on one side, Perissa's on the other.
Tip: Open early and closes at 3pm. An SUV or Jeep handles the hairpins more comfortably.
4. The Wine Country Loop
Distance: ~20 km | Drive: 40 min (plus tastings!) | Best time: Mid-afternoon
A circular route through Santorini's interior wine country: Fira → Pyrgos → Megalochori → Emporio → back to Fira. Along the way, stop at three or four of the island's top wineries. Boutari, Gavalas (Megalochori), Estate Argyros (Episkopi), and Venetsanos (caldera view) are all within this loop.
Tip: Designate a driver or limit tastings — Greek drink-driving limits (0.5g/L) are strictly enforced.
5. The Complete Island Circuit
Distance: ~40 km | Drive: 1.5–2 hours (with stops) | Best time: Full morning
Start in Fira, drive north to Oia, loop back via Baxedes and Colombo, south through Pyrgos and Emporio to Akrotiri, then east through Megalochori and the airport road back to Fira. You'll see every face of the island — caldera cliffs, farmland, beaches, villages, and ruins — in a single morning.
Tip: Start by 8am and finish at a beach for lunch. Perivolos or Vlychada make perfect endpoints.
